CHEC's Sam Malone awarded Duquesne's "Emerging Leaders' Extraction and Environment" travel grant

Samantha Malone, MPH, CPH, communications specialist for CHEC and doctoral student at GSPH, is a recipient of a travel grant from Duquesne University to participate in their Emerging Leaders' Extraction and Environment (E-LEEP) program. E-LEEP will take approximately 22 people from across the United States to Accra, Ghana this summer. There they will examine the effects of extractive industries on populations, economics, and the environment and share their experiences from working on similar issues in the U.S.  Read more from Sam's perspective.

Summary

Samantha Malone serves as the Communications Specialist for the Center for Health Environments and Communities (CHEC) located within the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH)'s Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) department.

Ms. Malone joined CHEC in 2009 after earning a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from GSPH in the Behavioral and Community Health Sciences (BCHS) department. During the pursuit of her MPH, she conducted internships through CHEC’s Allegheny River Stewardship Project (ARSP) and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s (UPMC) Healthy Choices for Students program. An academic-athletic scholar, she received her Bachelor of the Arts degree in Psychology from Washington and Jefferson College (W&J), graduating magna cum laude in 2006. Ms. Malone previously served as the Program Assistant and Webmaster for the world’s first Center for Environmental Oncology (CEO), founded within the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.

Ms. Malone is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Public Health (DrPH) degree from the EOH department where her focus is on the environmental health effects of resource extraction. In relation to her experience and studies, Ms. Malone travelled to Ghana, Africa during July 2011 on an E-LEEP grant from the U.S. State Department and Duquesne University to help assess the environmental, social, economic, and health effects of the country’s extractive industries.

At CHEC, Ms. Malone is the Webmaster, conducts environmental health research, and oversees the communication of CHEC's research projects and social media. Additionally, she is the content manager of FracTracker - a two-part online platform, comprising of FracTracker.org and Data.FracTracker.org, that helps to collect and provide accurate and up-to-date information about natural gas drilling.
